EIA’s August 12 Weekly Petroleum Status Report put U.S. commercial crude oil inventories, excluding the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, at 424.410 million barrels for the week ended August 7—17.422 million barrels above the prior week.

CONFIRMED FACTS The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released its Weekly Petroleum Status Report on August 12, 2026, covering the week ended August 7. EIA’s U.S. Petroleum Balance Sheet reported 424.410 million barrels of commercial crude oil stocks excluding the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), compared with 406.987 million barrels a week earlier. That is a week-over-week increase of 17.422 million barrels, or 4.3%, as shown in EIA’s table. The same table reported 298.694 million barrels in the SPR on August 7, down 6.115 million barrels from the prior week. Commercial crude stocks excluding the SPR were 2.289 million barrels, or 0.5%, below their level one year earlier. EIA’s report page identifies the release as data for the week ending August 7, 2026. Its linked balance-sheet CSV presents the weekly inventory values and comparisons used above. ANALYSIS The reported commercial-inventory increase is large relative to the preceding week’s level, while the simultaneous SPR decline means the change in commercial stocks should not be read as a change in total crude stocks alone. The figures describe inventories at a weekly point in time; they do not by themselves establish why stocks changed or whether the movement will persist. UNKNOWNS AND LIMITS This brief reports EIA’s preliminary weekly estimates and uses EIA’s commercial-stock measure excluding the SPR. It does not attribute the inventory change to a specific cause, infer future crude-oil prices, or replace analysis of refinery runs, imports, exports, production, demand, regional stocks, and later revisions. EIA also notes that its domestic crude-production estimate for this release includes a re-benchmarking adjustment of less than 50,000 barrels per day; that notice applies to production estimates, not to the reported commercial crude-stock level. UPDATE LOG Published August 12, 2026 after direct review of EIA’s Weekly Petroleum Status Report page and its linked U.S. Petroleum Balance Sheet CSV.
