The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ July 2026 import and export price release reported a 0.4% monthly decline in the all-imports index and a 1.3% decline in the all-exports index; fuel imports fell 7.2%.

CONFIRMED FACTS The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ August 18, 2026 U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes release reports that the all-imports price index declined 0.4% from June to July 2026, after a revised 0.3% decline in June. The release’s monthly table reports the all-imports index at 149.6 in July, down from 150.2 in June (2000=100). The same release reports that fuel-import prices fell 7.2% in July, while nonfuel-import prices rose 0.4%. It reports a 5.9% increase in all-import prices from July 2025 to July 2026. BLS reports that the all-exports price index fell 1.3% in July after a revised 0.7% decline in June. Agricultural export prices rose 1.0% in July, while nonagricultural export prices fell 1.5%. The release reports an 8.2% increase in all-export prices from July 2025 to July 2026. ANALYSIS The all-imports result combines opposing monthly movements in fuel and nonfuel categories: the 7.2% fall in fuel-import prices coincided with a 0.4% rise in nonfuel-import prices. Likewise, the all-exports result is an aggregate measure and should not be read as a uniform monthly price change across export categories. UNKNOWNS AND LIMITS These border-price indexes do not measure consumer prices, retail margins, or the price paid by every U.S. household or business. The release does not establish why the indexes changed or predict future inflation, trade volumes, exchange rates, or monetary-policy decisions. BLS notes that data may be revised in each of the three months after original publication; this brief reports the release’s published July values.
